3 Parallel Artworlds: 100 Art Things from Chinese Modern History presents a fresh approach to understanding modern China through the art historical and critical framework of ‘three parallel artworlds’: the world of globalised art; the world of Chinese pre-modern, or literati, art; and the world of socialist revolutionary art. Featuring essays by fourteen internationally prominent art historians, critical theorists and artists, and two documentary sections illustrating and interpreting over 100 artworks, the book seeks to delineate the major forms of art practices that are grounded in these three artworlds; and to demonstrate not only how they continue to inform the Chinese cultural imagination today, but also how they resonate across political and personal boundaries.

CHANG Tsong-Zung (Johnson Chang) is an international curator, founding director of Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong and visiting professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China.

GAO Shiming is the founding director of the School of Intermedia Art and Center of Visual Culture Research at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou; and an influential cross-disciplinary curator.

Authors:
Johan Frederik HARTLE is Assistant Professor of the Philosophy of Art and Culture at the Department of Philosophy, University of Amsterdam and Adjunct Professor for Philosophy and Art Theory at the School of Inter-media Art, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China.

Boris GROYS is Global Distinguished Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the New York University and Senior Research Fellow at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Eugene WANG is the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Professor of Asian Art at Harvard University. His present research interests include bio-visuality in early China and the sound-track effect in Chinese painting.

LIU Tian researches topics related to artistic creation, curating, writing and visual culture. He is a Ph.D candidate at the China Academy of Art’s Institute of Contemporary Art and Social Thought, School of Inter-Media Art.

LU Xinghua is Professor of Social Thought at the China Academy of Art. His research interests connect political philosophy with contemporary art.

John Rajchman is a philosopher and a professor of art history at Columbia University, New York, and a Contributing Editor at Artforum magazine.

QIU Zhijie is an artist and curator and Professor at the Total Art Studio and Centre of Visual Culture Research, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.

Hammad NASAR is a curator and Head of Research and Programmes at the Asia Art Archive.

HUANG Sun Quan is Assistant Professor in the Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art, National Kaohsiung Normal University and the Graduate Institute of Trans-disciplinary Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts.

May Bo CHING is Professor of History at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. Born and brought up in Hong Kong, her major research interest is the social and cultural history of modern China.

WANG Xiaoming is Professor of Cultural Studies at Shanghai University and Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Humanities at Lingnan University, Hong Kong.

Bei Dao is a celebrated poet and author whose work has been translated into more than thirty languages. He is currently Professor of Humanities at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
