The Art of Chu Hing Wah<\/em><\/strong><br>Chang Tsong-Zung<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written in Hong Kong in December of the 68<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year of the People\u2019s Republic<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chu Hing Wah\u2019s life story is neither dramatic nor extraordinary: rather, it is a story of \u2018ordinary happiness\u2019. For Chu Hing Wah, the way to happiness lies in finding contentment in the everyday, and in his own life he has mastered this principle. He is content with his lot in life, accepts things as they come, finds satisfaction in fulfilling his responsibilities, practices self-acceptance, and cherishes both people and things. Chu believes that the turns of fortune in his own life were gifts bestowed by heaven: winning a scholarship to study nursing in England, having the leisure time to discover the artistic riches of London\u2019s museums, going on to a fulfilling career working in psychiatric hospitals, practicing art and becoming part of a lively circle of artistic friends, meeting fellow aficionados who share a love of Cantonese opera\u2014for all of these things, Chu Hing Wah maintains a sense of fulfilment and gratitude. He values every experience, cares about every friend, respects others\u2019 points of view, and appreciates every experience. In this way, Chu Hing Wah basks in the elements of quotidian life.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But does this mean that his art is also \u2018ordinary\u2019? To the contrary, it is just because of the way it illuminates the beauty and charm of the ordinary that Chu Hing Wah\u2019s art is so extraordinarily captivating.<br><br>Whether or not one is aware of the calm and simplicity that characterize Chu Hing Wah\u2019s life journey, when one views his art it requires no special filters or methodologies. The narrative elements in his compositions are straightforward and familiar: a mountain is a mountain, a person is a person. Yet, it is only because we are encountering Chu Hing Wah\u2019s art that we chance to notice this particular mountain, or that particular person. It is as intuitively direct, as in the way a child finds pleasure in looking at the world. The simplicity of Chu\u2019s painting technique is such that it is almost irrelevant to pass judgement on whether it is good or bad. His objective descriptions do not aim for accuracy of representation: rather, his forms are awkward and simplistic, and oddly static, as though the figures in his paintings were in a state of suspended animation. While they communicate the sense of a narrative moment, one feels that the plotline they are part of is neither unusual nor complicated: there is no intrigue, no mystery to unravel.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compelling quality of Chu\u2019s paintings lies neither in technique nor in narrative complexity, but rather in the way they draw us in. The more attentive we are to these roughly delineated figures and landscapes, the more deeply we look at them and \u2018listen\u2019 to their presence, the more we understand that their stories are endless.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chu Hing Wah says, \u2018Come look, here is a mountain, here is a person.\u2019 But what kind of person is it that Chu Hing Wah is looking at, and what kind of landscape?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chu Hing Wah\u2019s paintings reveal a kind of timeless message to us. Although they are tranquil and intimate, they also contain a quality of serene melancholy. This is not the unchanging serenity of a utopia or a heavenly paradise, but rather the kind of profound calm that manifests in the wake of a great storm or tsunami; the deathly stillness that follows a period of cataclysmic violence. When people have survived an event in which the ordinary tenor of life has been completely turned upside down, they are no longer concerned with value judgments, but rather with trying to come to a new understanding of life and the world.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quietude and stillness in Chu Hing Wah\u2019s art is an expression of the understanding that comes in the aftermath of shared disaster; and it is this that sets his art apart from that of a child who sees a mountain as a mountain. His landscapes emerge from the mutual understanding that comes when one has survived a shattering change in one\u2019s world. Rather than on the form of a person or a landscape, Chu Hing Wah\u2019s vision is focused on the shared experience of being alive in this world at this moment.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have wondered about the connection between Chu Hing Wah\u2019s professional life as a psychiatric nurse and his artistic creation. For over 25 years, he spent days and nights caring for the mentally ill, becoming deeply familiar with his patients\u2019 inner world\u2014a world that exists outside the bounds of \u2018normal\u2019 society. Yet Chu has always strongly maintained that these patients, many of whom became his friends, are neither \u2018abnormal\u2019 nor \u2018deficient\u2019. He believes that their world is legitimate, whole and complete: the only difference is that their world does not share the same trajectory of language as that of normal society;\u00a0yet it has its own logic and reason. Though the boundaries of their world are confined by this difference in language, yet within this separate system they can create a way of life that works for them.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chu Hing Wah\u2019s paintings depict both people who are a familiar part of our everyday social world, with whom we share the same social language, and patients who communicate differently, through their unique individual languages\u2014but in Chu\u2019s paintings, we cannot distinguish which is which. In Chu Hing Wah\u2019s world, we all share the same right to exist on this earth, and each person has his or her own place. Finding one\u2019s authentic place within this life is contingent on bringing a sense of love and compassion to one\u2019s understanding of life\u2019s purpose.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chu Hing Wah\u2019s message to us is that our greatest blessing is to be alive. For those who have survived calamity, the distinctions of fortune or status become irrelevant. The melancholic serenity which emanates from his paintings comes from a place of loving understanding. I cannot say exactly why his paintings bring to mind the idea of renewed life after a storm; maybe it is because their sense of a timeless quotidian serenity is never monotonous, but rather is always felt as a blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Translation by Valerie C. \u4ed6\u5b89\u65bc\u73fe\u72c0\uff0c\u5b89\u65bc\u8077\u5b88\uff0c\u6a02\u5929\u77e5\u547d\uff0c\u611b\u4eba\u60dc\u7269\u3002\u751f\u547d\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u500b\u8f49\u6298\u9ede\u5c0d\u4ed6\u4f86\u8aaa\u90fd\u662f\u4e0a\u5929\u6069\u8cdc\uff1a\u53d7\u9812\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u5230\u82f1\u570b\u5b78\u7fd2\u8b77\u7406\uff0c\u502b\u6566\u8ab2\u9592\u767c\u73fe\u85dd\u8853\u535a\u7269\u9928\u7684\u73cd\u85cf\uff0c\u5728\u7cbe\u795e\u8b77\u7406\u9662\u7684\u751f\u6daf\uff0c\u7e6a\u756b\u9053\u8def\u4e0a\u8a8d\u8b58\u85dd\u8853\u5708\u670b\u53cb\uff0c\u7cb5\u66f2\u5927\u6232\u627e\u5230\u540c\u9053\uff0c\u9019\u4e00\u5207\u6731\u8208\u83ef\u90fd\u6eff\u61f7\u611f\u6fc0\u3002\u4ed6\u73cd\u60dc\u6bcf\u6bb5\u7d93\u6b77\uff0c\u91cd\u8996\u6bcf\u4f4d\u76f8\u77e5\uff0c\u5c0a\u91cd\u4eba\u4eba\u7684\u7acb\u5834\uff0c\u56de\u5473\u4e00\u5207\u9ad4\u9a57\u3002<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4ed6\u7684\u7e6a\u756b\u7279\u5fb5\u662f\u5426\u4e5f\u5728\u65bc\u5e73\u6de1\u7121\u5947\uff1f\u61c9\u8a72\u8aaa\u6b63\u9069\u5176\u53cd\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u7e6a\u756b\u9b45\u529b\u5728\u65bc\u5e73\u6de1\u51fa\u5947\u3002<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u7121\u8ad6\u77e5\u9053\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u6731\u8208\u83ef\u7684\u7c21\u55ae\u751f\u5e73\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u770b\u4ed6\u7684\u756b\u4e26\u4e0d\u9700\u8981\u4efb\u4f55\u7ac5\u9580\u3002\u4ed6\u4f5c\u54c1\u7684\u5167\u5bb9\u5e73\u92ea\u76f4\u8ff0\uff0c\u770b\u5c71\u662f\u5c71\uff0c\u770b\u4eba\u662f\u4eba\u3002\u4e0d\u904e\uff0c\u8981\u4e0d\u662f\u6731\u8208\u83ef\u756b\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u4e0d\u898b\u5f97\u770b\u5230\u9019\u5ea7\u5c71\u9019\u500b\u4eba\u3002\u6b63\u5982\u5c0f\u5b69\u898b\u5230\u4e8b\u7269\u6703\u4e00\u4e0b\u5b50\u6b61\u559c\uff1a\u9019\u5152\u770b\u898b\u6709\u6a39\uff0c\u9019\u5c31\u662f\u6a39\u4e86\uff0c\u90a3\u908a\u770b\u898b\u6709\u6a13\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31\u662f\u6a13\u4e86\u3002\u6280\u5de7\u55ae\u7d14\u5230\u7121\u6cd5\u8aaa\u597d\u8aaa\u58de\uff0c\u5927\u5bb6\u4e0d\u6703\u6545\u610f\u53bb\u8a55\u4ed6\u7e6a\u756b\u7684\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u4ed6\u7684\u5ba2\u89c0\u63cf\u8ff0\u4e26\u4e0d\u6e96\u78ba\uff0c \u9020\u578b\u7b28\u62d9\u7c21\u964b\uff0c\u53c8\u7f3a\u4e4f\u904b\u52d5\u611f\u3002\u756b\u9762\u7684\u5f62\u9ad4\u4e00\u500b\u500b\u639b\u5728\u90a3\u88cf\uff0c\u8868\u793a\u67d0\u4e9b\u6545\u4e8b\u60c5\u7bc0\uff0c\u4f46\u6545\u4e8b\u4e26\u4e0d\u51fa\u5947\uff0c\u4e0d\u6703\u5f15\u4eba\u6df1\u7a76\u3002\u4f46\u96e2\u5947\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u770b\u756b\u4eba\u770b\u8457\u770b\u8457\u7adf\u7136\u6703\u88ab\u8ff7\u4f4f\u4e86\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u756b\u5f97\u4e0d\u6e96\u78ba\u7684\u4eba\u7269\u6a13\u623f\uff0c\u6c92\u6709\u7279\u5225\u60c5\u7bc0\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u7adf\u7136\u8d8a\u770b\u8d8a\u597d\u770b\uff0c\u4e0d\u503c\u5f97\u7279\u5225\u8b1b\u7684\u5e73\u6de1\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u5c45\u7136\u8b93\u4eba\u5f88\u60f3\u807d\u4e0b\u53bb\uff0c\u8d8a\u807d\u8d8a\u597d\u50cf\u6709\u8aaa\u4e0d\u76e1\u7684\u4eba\u751f\u6545\u4e8b\u3002<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u6731\u8208\u83ef\u8aaa\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u5ea7\u5c71\uff0c\u4f60\u4f86\u770b\u3002\u4ed6\u770b\u5230\u4ec0\u9ebc\u6a23\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u770b\u5230\u4ec0\u9ebc\u6a23\u7684\u6a13\u623f\u5c71\u6c34\u5462\uff1f<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u6731\u8208\u83ef\u7684\u756b\u9762\u900f\u9732\u4e00\u7a2e\u6c38\u6046\u7684\u8a0a\u606f\uff0c\u5bec\u5bb9\u5e73\u6b63\u800c\u5bb9\u6613\u89aa\u8fd1\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u6c88\u6fb1\u8457\u4e00\u6d3e\u5b89\u8a73\u7684\u6c88\u9b31\u3002
